BLOW-UP · International Arthouse Filmfest · Chicago, 2021

“The Imaginary Kaleidoscope” is a Semi-Finalist at BLOW-UP · International Arthouse Filmfest · Chicago, 2021

Chantal Partamian’s response to Burnt Film Festival’s THIRD EDITION Program 4/12

Chantal Partamian writes about “Her Type” in their response to the Burnt Film Festival program:

“…The time when a photograph is taken, a photograph is seen and then the time when it’s looked at again.

How much can one rely on the photographs? And how does one make sure a day is remembered when it does not have a signifier? Ikehata’s film is a mixture of archives and landscapes but also the narrator’s memories and those of their mother. A blend of past and present where mother/daughter realities, memories and their physical existence in a space in different times, intertwine.

The overlap in Masha Vlasova’s “Her Type”, is that between the filmmaker and their father. By the manipulation of a photograph through a masculinizing application, Masha now resembles her dad. The space between the mother’s gaze and the photograph on the phone becomes that of a romantic recollection, a longing for a deceased lover. A space where intimate desires surface and tension between the subject and the camera is palpable…”

Checkerboard Borders, online film screening, and event series, 2021

March 8-19, 2021. Checkerboard Borders, online film screening, and event series, 2021

I co-curated and organized a screening and event series with the support of the Cultural Affairs Grant from Wofford College. The screening foregrounded contemporary experimental and avant-garde films from Iran, Mexico, China, Taiwan, and Palestine that stalk the themes of memory, longing, home-coming, and displacement. The films have a unique visual and narrative approach and explore performance and performativity for, in collaboration with, or in spite of the camera.

The screening is a collaboration with Sarah Lasley and was organized in conjunction with a panel with filmmakers and a lecture titled “Screening Palestine” by Dr. Nadia Yaqub.
